The Triton Lady Trojan Varsity Wrestling team kicked off its 2026-27 season today at the 3rd Annual Lady Wildcat Wrestling Invitational at Whitko, and the girls wasted no time making their presence known. Competing against 23 teams, Triton finished 10th overall with just five scoring wrestlers, an impressive team finish considering the smaller lineup. The Lady Trojans brought seven wrestlers to the tournament, with two competing at the same weight classes as teammates and therefore not contributing to the team score. Leading the way were Kailyn Schuh and Kensie Schuh, who both captured individual championship titles with undefeated performances. At 100 pounds, Kailyn Schuh went 3-0, earning one tech fall and two pins on her way to a first-place finish. At 105 pounds, Kensie Schuh went 4-0, recording three pins, including one in the championship match. One of her biggest wins came in the semifinals, where she faced last year's Whitko Champion, a senior wrestler from Wawasee. After giving up five early points, Kensie settled in, took control of the match, and scored 13 unanswered points to secure an impressive 13-5 major decision victory. She carried that momentum into the championship round, where she earned another pin to claim first place. Brianna Lockhart also turned in a strong performance at 4th place at 125lbs, finishing the day 3-2 with three pins. One of her toughest matches came against the eventual runner-up. The match was tied 3-3 at the halfway point before a couple of mistakes allowed her opponent to pull away, resulting in a 12-3 major decision. The tournament also marked the first-ever wrestling matches for Isabelle Hernandez (145 pounds) and Joelie Stetzel (100 pounds, non-scoring). Both girls finished 0-2, but gained valuable experience as they took their first steps into competitive wrestling. Caiti Gould (105 pounds, non-scoring) battled through sickness to compete, finishing 0-2. Her first match was especially close and could have gone either way. Gabe Ford (135 pounds) went 0-1, facing the No. 2-ranked wrestler in her weight class. Unfortunately, Gabe suffered an injury during the match and had to withdraw from the remainder of the tournament. Coach Jason Arvesen had plenty of positives to take away from the season opener. "I'm really proud of all these girls. The beginners are getting their first taste of action, and for the three placers, all the work they have been putting in over the offseason really showed today. We lost a lot of girls to graduation, including some good senior wrestlers. We have a smaller team this year, but the future is BRIGHT!" The Lady Trojans may have a smaller roster this season, but today's results showed that hard work, determination, and a commitment to improving can make a big impact. With returning wrestlers continuing to build on their experience and newcomers getting their first taste of competition, there is plenty of excitement ahead for Triton girls wrestling. Congratulations to Kailyn Schuh and Kensie Schuh on their first-place finishes and to Brianna Lockhart on her fourth-place finish! An outstanding way to open the season. The Lady Trojans are just getting started!
